FKA Twigs announces forthcoming collaboration with Saffron

Music Weeks’ Inspirational Artist of the Year declared her commitment to improving representation in the industry.

FKA Twigs has announced a forthcoming collaboration with Saffron to support our work diversifying the music tech landscape of producers and engineers.

Collecting her Inspirational Artist award at last week’s Music Week Women In Music awards, Twigs spoke up about her experiences in the studio and the lack of inclusivity in tech that she has seen over her career:

“In the two decades I’ve been in the studio, aside from the sessions where it’s been at my request, I’ve only worked with one female engineer. I’ve met one female head of a label, and no female producers have ever accidentally joined any of my studio sessions…I wish when I started out, I could have had more women around me — engineers, techs, managers, executives — more support, more advice, more people to hold those accountable who made me feel uncomfortable. Then maybe I wouldn’t have had to navigate so much unnecessary noise.”

Through launching an educational grant programme together with Saffron, she hopes to support more women and non-binary people “working at the backbone of the industry – techs, engineers, all of the roles I hope to see more women earning and being successful at in the future”. We are honoured to be working with Twigs, a true West Country inspiration for our community of music makers and shapers. Stay tuned for more info on the programme we’re developing together.

We have worked so hard over the last ten years, and to now get this recognition of support is massive for us. We’d love more artists and industry figures to truly get on board with the change we are making, gradually, honestly and authentically.
