5 questions with… Meggy Mac!

We catch up with Saffron alumni, DJ and producer Meggy Mac as she celebrates the release of her debut EP.

Congratulations on the release of your debut EP! Tell us a bit about it.

Thank you! My EP, “Boogie Dial,” blends two distinct tracks made with a common formula. It’s the result of my self-taught journey through Logic YouTube tutorials and the Saffron music production course. I immersed myself in 80s sample packs, especially Chicago house, to craft the tracks. “Dial Tone Goodbye” features big 80s drums and voicemail samples.

This release comes just 6 months after you took part in our beginner music production course in Bristol. That’s mad! What has the process leading up to this point looked like?

It’s been crazy, but also incredibly helpful because I now know where I fit sound-wise. Taking the Saffron production course not only helped me understand what I was doing but also connected me with other Bristol artists making similar sounds. Their feedback and support have been invaluable and even helped me secure DJ gigs. Initially, releasing an EP was just a personal goal to achieve before turning 30, but it’s grown into something much more meaningful.

As well as taking part in the Ableton Live course, you were also a participant on Saffron’s radio broadcasting and Mix Nights courses. Has there been any benefits to exploring music tech from this multi-angle approach?

Absolutely, 100%! Coming in as a music newbie and exploring the different genres of music has been invaluable. Each month on my radio show, I try to dive into a different genre, absorbing its nuances and discovering what I love about it. This exposure has helped my music production, helping me know exactly what elements to incorporate. For example, I might look for yacht rock drums or Chicago house samples, then blend them into my tracks. Bringing them together and trying to make them work has really helped my creativity and technical skills

You also received some 1-2-1 mentoring from Danielle. What has that relationship been like?

I love Danielle so much! It’s amazing to see her smashing it right now, and I feel privileged to have been taught by her because she really knows her stuff. Initially, I had 1-2-1 sessions to improve my mixing skills, but it became apparent that what I really needed was confidence. Danielle has definitely helped build that confidence in me with her support and reassurance. Her experience as a label boss lady has been incredibly helpful, especially when I have questions about how releases work.

Lastly, what’s next for Meggy Mac?

I’m not entirely sure, but I’m definitely planning to put out more music. I’d love to play at a music festival! I feel like I’ve found my space within the Bristol music ecosystem and am happy with whatever comes my way. I’ve been steadfast in not wanting to stick to a specific genre or vibe—it’s more about exploring and creating music that has a story which brings me full circle back to my radio show Lost Tapes.

Meggy’s debut EP “Boogie Dial” is out now on Non Stop Rhythm.
