Mix Nights Online: An Intro to Sound System Culture & Creation
17th November 2025
7.30 - 9.00 pm GMT
£8.30 or free for sustainer and soulmate members
This workshop is presented as part of Saffron Members Club, but non-members who are women, trans, non-binary or gender non-conforming may also purchase a ticket.
AN INTRODUCTION TO SOUND SYSTEM CULTURE & CREATION
Join Sonic Sirens for an online journey through the history and heartbeat of sound system culture, from its roots in ancient gatherings to Carnival and the underground raves, protest movements, and DIY collectives that keep the sound alive today.
We’ll explore how sound systems became tools of resistance, celebration, and connection, tracing their evolution through modern rave culture, community-led gatherings, and grassroots audio design. Along the way, we’ll share insights from our own project – the creation of a 12V mobile sound system built for sustainability, mobility, and community use.
Expect a mix of storytelling, visuals, open discussion, and sonic imagination.
Together, we’ll ask:
– What does it mean to share sound collectively today?
– How can we reclaim public space through music and design?
– What could the future of sound systems look like when built through care, collaboration, and freedom?
This session invites curiosity, questions, and dreams
ABOUT SONIC SIRENS
We are Lupa and Fiona. We met on the dance floor and years later, Sonic Sirens was born, out of that love for music and freedom.
With our backgrounds – one of us a multidisciplinary artist/DJ, the other a carpenter and set builder/designer, we want to give more space to people who, like us, feel sidelined in male-dominated fields.
Right now, we are working on a 12V mobile sound system: sustainable, modular, and made to travel. From protest to parties, grassroots events and beyond we aim to support communities unheard in mainstream narratives, especially in music, carpentry and tech spaces.

GENDER POLICY
The gender imbalance in the music technology industry is well-recognised. While we are absolutely not ‘anti-men’, we see that a shorter-term solution is to provide fellowship and learning environments that are not dominated by the cisgender male perspective. Therefore, these workshops are intended for women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming people to attend. While we do not ban cisgender men from attending, we hope that they will respect that this event is not intended for them.
