HANAH releases new single ahead of forthcoming EP ‘Colours of Now & Then’
The latest release from the Brighton-based singer, songwriter and producer is a love letter to her late grandmother.
“For my grandmother Michaeleen, and all those we’ve loved and lost”
Following on from her hugely successful debut, Watch The World in Detail, we’re delighted to announce that HANAH will be releasing her second EP – Colours of Now & Then – later this month on Saffron Records.
Out on 26th October, Colours of Now & Then is an incredibly intimate project. Led by a loop-heavy, and often very experimental, production framework, this powerful new body of work is fuelled by cathartic expression; Colours of Now & Then is a love letter to HANAH’s late grandmother. HANAH’s vocal performance feels raw and enveloping throughout, unpacking themes of love and loss, and written alone in the privacy of her bedroom.
The lead single from the EP, Solo is available to listen to now. Here, HANAH’s voice is another instrument, an equal, floating between layers of arpeggiating synths and anchored by sunny, shuffling drums.
Underscored by a Julia Holter-esque percussive palette, in Where Do I Go From Here? (Track 2), HANAH’s bewitching vocals unspool. Influenced by her childhood beside the sea, HANAH employs an electro-acoustic methodology in this track, building texture and adding richness through washed-out synths and her use of natural samples.
Texturally, there is a closeness and tactility to Colours of Now & Then (Track 3), with its plucking ukulele and Eartheater-like ethereality. HANAH imbues an accomplished sense of simplicity into each of her collage-like arrangements and, as it has done throughout the rest of the EP, her thoughtful, and always emotive, lyrical imprint underpins the final track.
Played across BBC Radio 6 Music, NTS and Worldwide FM, and supported by tastemakers including Jamz Supernova and Joy O, HANAH’s debut Watch The World in Detail [EP] was described as “a fervid mix of heady folktronica” and hailed a “triumph” by Clash Magazine.
HANAH is going from strength to strength and her creative power goes far beyond her songwriting and production; two tracks from the EP, Solo and Colours of Now & Then, will have a visual accompaniments. Co-directed by HANAH, these visuals, along with the EP artwork and HANAH’s press shots, were made and edited by her close friend and long-time collaborator, Fleur Adderley.
Two icons in a DIY generation, this duo epitomise the words “passion project” and their work together is well aligned with HANAH’s musical identity, reflecting the same dreamy and experimental energy.
