We’re excited to announce a new series of online workshops that seek to unlock music sync and licensing opportunities for women, trans and nonbinary people.
Presented in partnership with Cavendish Music, sessions in this three-month series will offer emerging artists a space to connect and explore the landscape of modern production music, supporting them to build professionalism and sustainability in their creative careers.
WORKSHOP 1: AN INTRO TO SYNC
Want to make money from your music and broaden your exposure as an artist? Sync licensing presents a brilliant opportunity for independent music creators to develop sustainability in their careers through placing their tracks in adverts and other visual media. In this online workshop hosted by Joanna Gregory (Head of Strategy and Operations at Cavendish Music), we will introduce you to the burgeoning landscape of music sync and licensing, so you can get a feel for whether it’s right for you. We will cover:
- The origins of production music
- How production music has evolved over time
- What Cavendish does and where they sit within the market
- Learn about the different types of sync revenues
- How to place yourself within these markets as an artist or composer
- How royalties work
This will be an interactive session with plenty of opportunities to ask questions, so it’s worth joining live if you can!
ABOUT JOANNA GREGORY
Joanna has worked in sync for over 14 years. Her passion for music began as a young teen writing and playing music in various (notably terrible) bands. She then went on to study music and media at the BRIT School before embarking in a career within TV. Working as a researcher for shows such as Richard & Judy and Saturday Kitchen, she’d spend long hours in the edit suites, cutting together features which ignited her passion for sync. In 2010 she decided to turn her hand to music publishing and began to work at EMI Production Music, before eventually moving on to head up the sync department at Cavendish Music, one of the UK’s leading production libraries. Here she has developed relationships with global media organisations, broadcasters and advertising agencies which has resulted in Cavendish’s catalogue being placed in adverts, films, games, TV shows worldwide.
Cavendish Music’s recent notable work includes placements on The Crown, Bridgerton and producing TikTok viral sensation Funny Song.

GENDER POLICY
The gender imbalance in the music technology industry is well-recognised. While we are absolutely not ‘anti-men’, we see that a shorter-term solution is to provide fellowship and learning environments that are not dominated by the cisgender male perspective. Therefore, these workshops are intended for women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming people to attend. While we do not ban cisgender men from attending, we hope that they will respect that this event is not intended for them.
ABOUT CAVENDISH
We are the people behind the music on films like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tolkien, & I, Tonya; TV shows including The Crown, Planet Earth, and Doctor Who; and adverts for everything from Gucci to Audi.
We started out in 1937 as Boosey & Hawkes Recorded Music Library and are the UK’s largest independent production music publisher, part of the Anthem Entertainment family. We have a catalogue of 100,000+ tracks, from all eras, in all genres. We’re the proud parents of seven labels and represent some of the world’s best music libraries. Our awards cabinet could rival the big boys’ (although we don’t like to brag), and our studio in King’s Cross is frequently booked by some of the top names in the business.
