Educate and Celebrate on Trans Day of Visibility

Three members of our global community share their personal recommendations and resources to celebrate and educate on International Trans Day of Visibility 2022.

On this International Trans Day of Visibility, we invited some members of our global community to contribute their personal recommendations and resources to celebrate and educate on aspects related to the trans experience. The list includes articles, videos, podcasts, and documentaries compiled by LA.MIMI, Joni Newham and Zvrra.

We’re often approached to collaborate on projects for “women in music”. Whilst these initiatives are needed, they can leave out a core aspect of our work, which is to also support those who identify under the umbrella of transgender; be that man, woman, nonbinary or other. At Saffron, we strive to address the imbalance in the music tech sector across the whole spectrum of gender diversity.

JONI’S RECOMMENDATIONS

Gender Reveal Podcast

Hosted by the wonderful Tuck Woodstock, this is a podcast that interviews trans people of all descriptions in an attempt to get even a tiny bit closer to figuring out what the heck gender is, anyway! (And because sometimes it’s exhausting to be trans and visible, they’re celebrating Trans Day of Staying In and Having a Nice Snack today!)

Variations by Juliet Jacques

Juliet’s vivid, emotionally rich and sharply observed writing in this short story collection narrativises the trans experience in the UK from the industrial revolution to the 21st century, and gave me an affirming perspective on my place in queer history through its stories of “how hard it is to love and be loved in a world that hates you.”

The Matrix

To my knowledge the first piece of trans media I ever experienced, the Matrix is, among other things, Lana and Lily Wachowski’s articulation of the dissociative experience of being transgender in a neoliberal capitalist society. It also answers the question “what if a western sci-fi epic had action scenes shot like a kung fu movie, and also Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss wore lots of leather?” so what’s not to like!

Identity: A Trans Coming Out Story

Abi Thorn’s incredible video on the experience of coming out was one of the things that helped me to come out to the people around me, and one of the first things I pointed people to, to help them understand what it might be like to be in my situation.

We Know the Devil

Worst Girls Games’ 2016 visual novel is a touching meditation on queerness, the mess and confusion of being a teenager and having to fight Satan even though you and your friends are kinda going through some stuff.

ABOUT JONI NEWHAM

Joni Newham is a tutor for Mix Nights Nottingham, and she DJs and produces as Outsider. Ask them about their special interests, which are varied and change regularly but mostly involve being queer and making loud noises.

LA.MIMI’S RECOMMENDATIONS

Trans Girls Belong on Girls’ Sports Teams

“Sex isn’t binary and we should stop acting like it is”

A first-person experience of an intersex person.
