EXPLORING SAMPLING & LOOPS THROUGH MODULAR SYNTHESIS

Join ORAM-award-winning artist, musician, and instrument-maker Coral Rose Kindred-Boothby (AKA The Silver Field) for a hands-on introduction to VCV Rack, a free music-making software that mimics a modular synthesiser.

In this beginner-friendly session, you’ll learn how to create and experiment with loops, sample-triggering, and granular synthesis—techniques that can be used to shape and transform sounds in exciting ways. You’ll build simple sound-making tools (known as “voices”) and explore different ways to compose with them.

Even though VCV Rack is a digital tool, many of the skills you’ll gain can also apply to real, physical modular synthesisers. No prior experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to experiment! Participants are encouraged to download VCV’s free Virtual Eurorack Studio software in advance of the workshop.

About The Silver Field

The Silver Field is a sound world of Coral Rose Kindred-Boothby. Voice, tapes, bass, samples, synthesis, strings, reeds, drums, small sounds, big sounds, sunlight, moonlight, a lot of water.

Using her modular synthesiser and other self-built electronic instruments, she weaves together song-soundscapes, creating a rich and dream-like tapestry of sound that draws from folk music tradition, experimental electronics and psychedelia.

Her LPs ‘Rooms’ and ‘Sing High! Sing Low!’, and split EP with Betwixt & Between Tapes received press in The Guardian, Mojo and The Quietus among others, and have had radio play and guest playlists on BBC 6Music and NTS

Her instrument design work has been showcased at Arusha Gallery (London), Haarlem Artspace (Wirksworth), ArcadeCampfa (Cardiff), Herrretics (Wirksworth), Firestation Creative (Dunfermline), and The Field (Ilkeston).

In 2024 she received an Oram Award, and in 2021 she was the recipient of Arts Council’s DYCP grant.

GENDER POLICY

The gender imbalance in the music technology industry is well-recognised. While we are absolutely not ‘anti-men’, we see that a shorter-term solution is to provide fellowship and learning environments that are not dominated by the cisgender male perspective. Therefore, these workshops are intended for women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming people to attend. While we do not ban cisgender men from attending, we hope that they will respect that this event is not intended for them.
