SOUNDCAPES & TEXTURES FROM AUDIO RECORDINGS
Sarahsson invites inspiration from many different genres, but connecting all of her work is the transformation of audio input into sonic landscapes and harmonic textures. Whether it’s an ancient drone, mutant percussion, an angelic choir or blasting noise, nearly all of what you hear is built from audio recordings and a variety of editing approaches. In this workshop we’ll learn what to look for in field recordings and how to quickly build harmonic arrangements with voices or instruments, and then how to manipulate these through granular, spectral and other processing methods for a whole world of applications.
ABOUT SARAHSSON
Devonshire-born Sarahsson is a composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, performance artist and DJ living and working in Bristol. Inspired as much by the natural world as she is by gore and harsh noise, Sarahsson fuses elements of classical music with metal, experimental electronics and folk. Her 2022 debut album ‘The Horgenaith’ draws on personal and cultural mythologies of femininity, transition and synaesthesia.
With a grant from Saffron in 2021 she spent time at a woodwork studio carving a Daxophone, a wooden bowed instrument, which has become an integral and unpredictable part of her live performances. Her soundtracking work began in 2016 with the Parisian fashion brand Maldito (formerly Neith Nyer), scoring their runway shows for four seasons, and more recently includes the Acne Studios’ Fall/Winter 2023 runway show, BAFTA Cymru & Iris Prize nominated ‘Nânt’ (2022) dir. Tom Chetwode-Barton, ‘Protopia Futures’ (2021) with Monika Bielskyte, and more.
Sarahsson has brought her unique ear for melody, rich textural harmony and dramatic narratives to an eclectic range of venues since 2020, playing alongside artists like Lyra Pramuk, Oklou, Nkisi, Marina Herlop & LEYA. Beginning her first European tour at Rewire Festival’s 2023 edition, and her second at Bendik Giske’s eponymous album release in Berlin’s Volksbühne, she has since signed with agency Qu Junktions and returned home to bring two site-specific performances to Bristol with lighting designer Roo MacPhee, commissioned by Bristol New Music Festival in collaboration with Impermanence, and Noods Radio with Damsel Elysium.

GENDER POLICY
The gender imbalance in the music technology industry is well-recognised. While we are absolutely not ‘anti-men’, we see that a shorter-term solution is to provide fellowship and learning environments that are not dominated by the cisgender male perspective. Therefore, these workshops are intended for women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming people to attend. While we do not ban cisgender men from attending, we hope that they will respect that this event is not intended for them.
