SOUND ART & COMPOSITION: EVERYTHING THEY DON’T TEACH YOU AT SCHOOL

In this online workshop, sound artist and composer France Jobin will discuss  her process of manipulating and assembling sounds into compositions. Using Ableton Live she will explore both technical and conceptual aspects of audio processing and putting together musical ideas. She will also share her thoughts on the mental, emotional and psychological aspects of surviving in this ever so fragile ecosystem that is the art world.

ABOUT FRANCE

France Jobin is a sound / installation / artist, film composer, and curator residing in Montreal, whose audio art can be qualified as “sound-sculpture”, reveals a minimalist approach to complex sound environments where analog and digital intersect. Her installations incorporate both musical and visual elements inspired by the architecture of physical spaces. Her work can be “experienced” internationally in a variety of unconventional spaces and new technology festivals.

Jobin has solo recordings on many renowned labels, mainly popmuzik records (JP), LINE (US), ROOM40 (AU), nvo (AT), Baskaru (FR) and ATAK (JP),No-ware (CL-DE) and Editions Mego (AT). Her sound art is also part of countless compilation albums.

While her music often makes use of restraint and limit, she isn’t one to shy away from extremes. Her skillful interplay between highs and lows, louds and softs, creates an intricate narrative, which stretches the listener’s perception and continually refocuses attention.

In 2021, she presented the world premiere of Entanglement AV with Markus Heckmann at Mutek Edition 22. Influenced by theories in quantum physics since 2008, the pandemic has allowed her time to study and dive into this scientific universe, Entanglement is the first iteration of this large-scale project..  Since the premiere, they have presented it at  Mutek ES in March 2022 and at INDEX – Biennale of media arts in Braga Portugal,  at GAS festival in October in Göteberg, Sweden, Mutek MX and Mutek JP. An XR version has also been created and has been touring worldwide since the launch of the Mutek Immersive Collection in August 2022. A third iteration – Entanglement dome – was presented at SAT Montreal and at the Zeiss planetarium in Berlin in 2023.

In 2020, she composed the soundtrack for Ouroboros – Maxime Le Flaguais’s first short film.

In November 2019 and 2024, she presented modular concerts (Buchla 100) at the Ernst Krenek Institute in Austria. She was a finalist at the Sonic Arts Awards 2014 (IT) in the Sonic Research category. In January 2013, the Conseil québécois de la musique awarded France Jobin with the prestigious Opus Prize for Concert of the year at AKOUSMA 8.

France Jobin’s work continues to evolve as technologies enable her to create new environments. France Jobin is published by Touch Music/Fairwood Music UK Ltd

GENDER POLICY

The gender imbalance in the music technology industry is well-recognised. While we are absolutely not ‘anti-men’, we see that a shorter-term solution is to provide fellowship and learning environments that are not dominated by the cisgender male perspective. Therefore, these workshops are intended for women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming people to attend. While we do not ban cisgender men from attending, we hope that they will respect that this event is not intended for them.
