Saffron s delighted to present the May instalment of its ‘Saffron Members Club‘ online workshop programme. For women, trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming people worldwide.
STARTING A COLLECTIVE
In this open and interactive session, Femme Bass Mafia’s Gaia and Lilia will share their experiences of starting and sustaining collectives within the electronic music space.
Drawing on their work with FBM, and its offshoot – Angel Audio Soundsystem – they’ll reflect on their key learnings, exploring both the rewarding and challenging aspects of working collaboratively. Across this two-hour session, we’ll touch on:
- The practicalities of running collectives and community projects
- The story behind Femme Bass Mafia and the development of Angel Audio
- Defining a shared purpose and vision
- Approaches to collective decision-making
- Navigating challenges and supporting each other through burnout
- The realities of funding and sustaining long-term work
There will be space for discussion and shared reflection throughout, and we hope participants will leave feeling encouraged in their own ideas, with some practical tools and perspectives to support their projects.
Think you would benefit from this session, but can’t afford to contribute? We have a few bursary spaces reserved for those in positions of financial hardship. We trust these will be taken by those who need them – no questions asked. To request one, please email us at members@saffronmusic.uk.
ABOUT FEMME BASS MAFIA
Founded in 2020, Femme Bass Mafia (FBM) is a Berlin-based mentoring program dedicated to fostering safer learning spaces for femme, trans, and non-binary people within the bass music scene. FBM strives to enhance accessibility to musical education and supports our mentees in launching their DJing careers. In 2023, FBM expanded into music production mentoring, training participants toward making their first tracks, in close collaboration with Ableton.
Over the years, FBM has developed additional programmes to support more advanced skills and community-focused projects, including sessions on sustaining a DJ career and an initiative exploring sound system culture, which ultimately led to the formation of Angel Audio Soundsystem, now run by the alumni mentees.
Aside from being an educational program, FBM has grown into a community of over 60 bass-music-passionates, sharing skills and resources, and performing together through showcases in clubs and festivals around Berlin and Europe, from De School in Amsterdam to a stage takeover at Outlook Festival in Croatia. These shows, together with a recurring Plasma event at RSO Berlin, have welcomed artists such as Ehua, DJ Flight, Mia Koden, Mad Miran, Darwin, and more, alongside local talents and FBM graduates and mentors.

GENDER POLICY
The gender imbalance in the music technology industry is well-recognised. While we are absolutely not ‘anti-men’, we see that a shorter-term solution is to provide fellowship and learning environments that are not dominated by the cisgender male perspective. Therefore, these workshops are intended for women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming people to attend. While we do not ban cisgender men from attending, we hope that they will respect that this event is not intended for them.
