Mix Nights Online: Scratch Mixing & Creative Turntablism w/ NikNak

24th June 2024

7.30 pm BST

£8.30 or free for Sustainer & Soulmate members (bursaries available)

Saffron, in collaboration with Audio-Technica, are pleased to present a three-month series of online vinyl DJ workshops for women, trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming people worldwide.

SCRATCH MIXING & CREATIVE TURNTABLISM

Get started with scratch mixing under the wing of multi-disciplinary artist and DJ, NikNak.

In this online session, NikNak will provide an overview of turntablism and its history before demonstrating how she uses the technique in her productions and performances. In doing so, she hopes to dispel ideas of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ and inspire you to experiment with the creative potential of the turntable in your own way.

Whether you’re a DJ looking to bring something extra to your sets or a producer hoping to expand your repertoire of music-making techniques, come along to connect with our community and discover something new.

Other sessions in this series are hosted by Darcy Archer (23 May) and Tina Edwards (30 July).  Click here to view the full lineup.

ABOUT NIKNAK

music creative with many roles in the industry. NikNak holds an impressive repertoire of experimental albums & EPs, and remixes that have captivated audiences worldwide. With her enthralling self-released debut album “Bashi” earning rave reviews, NikNak has also made history as the first Black Turntablist to win the prestigious Oram Award in 2020.

As a DJ, NikNak has shared the stage with the likes of Mr Scruff, Lefto Early Bird, Ila Brugal, Jamz Supanova, Craig Charles, Om Unit, Jon1st, Grandmaster Flash and many more notable artists. She has been recognised as one of DJMag’s “Ones to Watch” in 2022, and has performed at Berghain, Glastonbury, Outlook UK, Dimensions, Cuidad Emergente in Argentina, FiftyLab Festival in Brussels and many more events. Each NikNak set is expansive, unique, ambitious, genre-defying, and serves as a testament to her sponge-like musical knowledge. On the radio, NikNak has shown her huge musical knowledge via shows like “Melanin” on Worldwide FM and “Dystopia” on Refuge Worldwide, to name a few.

As an artist/producer, NikNak regularly pushes boundaries on what the turntables are capable of. Taking inspiration from a wide variety of genres and artists, NikNak lets her ideas and creatively flow freely – leading her to have worked on various theatre productions and R&Ds as a sound designer, performer, and composer/producer, and also being a member of Eve’sDropCollective & TC And The Groove family

GENDER POLICY

The gender imbalance in the music technology industry is well-recognised. While we are absolutely not ‘anti-men’, we see that a shorter-term solution is to provide fellowship and learning environments that are not dominated by the cisgender male perspective. Therefore, these workshops are intended for women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming people to attend. While we do not ban cisgender men from attending, we hope that they will respect that this event is not intended for them.
