PRODUCING A HIT SONG

In this session, Xylo will be breaking down the production of the pop hit ‘Flowers’ by Miley Cyrus and re-building the different elements from the ground up on Ableton.

Xylo says: “Breaking down pop songs can help you analyse how they are put together, which can often result in inspiration for your own music in a similar genre. I want to look at this track because it’s very simple production but used really effectively. We’ll be looking at how producing hit tracks is not always about adding more elements, but strengthening the core elements of the song.”

Xylo will cover simple techniques to make your drums hit harder, drum layering, active listening, sidechain compression and controlling your low end. There will also be a Q&A at the end of the session, with the opportunity to ask for input and advice.

ABOUT XYLO ARIA

Xylo Aria is a singer, producer, entrepreneur and true visionary. Born in India and residing Australia, Xylo brings her global perspective into her music and everything she does. In 2017 Xylo took the decision to produce her own music, after which she released her first set of self produced tracks. These tracks got significant coverage on Australian publications including Tonedeaf, Pilerats and Australian Music Scene as well as radio coverage on numerous radio stations such as PBS and Triple R.

Reflecting on the hardships she faced as a female musician working with a choice of only male producers, and also the challenges of learning to self produce in an area of music which was heavily male dominated, planted the seed for the online education platform MPW – Music Production for Women. Determined to break down the barriers that she faced in approaching music tech while making the space more inviting for women, she created and launched the MPW platform in early 2019.

Since then, Xylo has been named a Top 50 East London Innovator of 2020 award, a finalist in the 2022 Australian Business xCellence Awards, a finalist in the 2023 Young Professionals IABCA Award and been included on the SheSaidSo top 100 Alt Power list. MPW in the meantime has grown significantly, taught in excess of 7000 students from over 120 countries and been included in university studies, featured in numerous podcasts and included in various articles on the topic around the world.

In 2023, Xylo Aria was also named as a Director and Treasurer of the Music Producer and Engineers’ Guild of Australia as well a National Committee member of Women in Music Australia.
