AN INTRO TO AMBIENT MIXING
London-based deep-techno and ambient DJ Sybil will take you through the basics of mixing ambient music. Have you ever wondered how DJing ambient is different to playing club sets? Or what ‘ambient music’ even means? Speaking from her 7 years of experience playing ambient sets, Sybil will guide you through an overview of what you need to know to get started in the chillout room, covering:
• What is ambient music?
• How ambient DJing is different to club DJing
• Storytelling with ambient music in sets and mixes
• Building tension & release with ambient
• Organising music for ambient sets
• Using MixedInKey software and key-mixing
• A walkthrough of planning an ambient mix
ABOUT SYBIL
Sybil is a storyteller, her sets bring listeners along on exciting voyages through the imagination. At the core of Sybil’s mystical selections is an emotional depth, textural clarity and a sense of space. Whilst best known for her propulsive deep techno sets, she is equally adept at journeying through wistful ambient, sumptuous downtempo, and expansive drone within more horizontal settings.
She has cultivated a distinctive emotional and transcendent style of ambient DJing, as showcased in her much-loved ambient, drone and experimental mix series, Deep Mind Music, which she has run since 2017, and on her entries for mix series such as Ute, Mysteries Of The Deep, Music For Interstellar Spacecrafts, co:clear and c-. These mixes are notable for their highly visual narrative arcs, stitching together music from a broad palette of textures, contrasting new finds with long forgotten gems, to create memorable stories which are both rewarding and entrancing.
Ambient sets form a core part of Sybil’s repertoire, with downtempo appearances at We Out Here, Field Maneuvers, Paral·lel, and WHOLE festival, as well as Liminal Dreams in Tokyo, infinity rug in Lisbon, Strange Brew in Bristol, and Brilliant Corners and IKLECTIK in her home-base of London. Sybil’s DJing takes her across the global club and festival circuit, and in 2024 she has returned from her first Asia tour, playing in Japan, Korea, China and Hong Kong, as well as visiting Australia for the first time. When at home, she can be found hosting off-grid trance raves for friends deep in the British countryside.

GENDER POLICY
The gender imbalance in the music technology industry is well-recognised. While we are absolutely not ‘anti-men’, we see that a shorter-term solution is to provide fellowship and learning environments that are not dominated by the cisgender male perspective. Therefore, these workshops are intended for women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming people to attend.
