SAMPLING: NAVIGATING A GREY AREA IN MUSIC COPYRIGHT

We are so excited to have music lawyer Jen O’Neill hosting our next Industry Insights workshop, in which she will be providing a field guide to navigating the complex landscape of music copyright. She will be covering the following areas:

– What is copyright, how does it work and why is it important?

– How much of a sample can you use without infringing on copyright?

– Are there ways of manipulating a sample that mean it’s fair to use?

– Distributing unreleased tracks with uncleared samples online – is it copyright infringement?

– What’s the deal with using samples from sample libraries? Is it safe?

This session will conclude with a Q&A where you will have the opportunity to ask questions of your own, so it’s worth joining live if you can!

ABOUT JEN

My name is Jen O’Neill and I have been working in the music industry as a business affairs associate at Hoare Associates for four years now. I have worked with every type of agreement you will come across in the music industry, working with major labels, independent labels and artists who want to self-release. Before its closure, I also worked at Chemical Records in Bristol for multiple years. When I was younger, I played in a Bristol punk band. It was at this point I realised that being a young musician and navigating music rights is extremely hard. This was the main pull that led me to where I am today.

I want to help demystify the agreement process, so it becomes easy for everyone involved to interpret.
