COMPOSING WITH REGIONAL FOLK RECORDINGS
What happens when we decentre ourselves in the artistic process and make music that uplifts the voices of others? What techniques can we use to restore agency, equality and connection?
In this online session, Noni-Mouse from Sound of Women will introduce us to FOLKSOUL – a cultural preservation project documenting the oral traditions of women in rural North India and merging them with contemporary expression.
Across the course of two-hours, she will discuss and share various electronic music production techniques that can be used to showcase folk recordings in a fresh light, focusing on creating arrangements that work for these regional compositions, instead of sampling or fragmenting them. In doing so, she will illustrate the methodology of Sound of Women, where they aim to create a new sonic packing for traditional songs.
This will be an interactive and participatory workshop, culminating in an exercise where we build a track together, as well as discuss the role of archiving in regional music.
The workshop will also explore the impact of the South Asian diaspora on the current narrative that surrounds South Asian regional music in the industry, and the general commodification of traditional practices by forces outside of our community.
ABOUT NONI-MOUSE
Listed as an artist to watch out for by Mixmag this year, Noni-Mouse is an Indian experimental sound artist, DJ and producer based in London, operating at the intersection of sexuality and numen.
ABOUT SOUND OF WOMEN
An initiative started by Indian rapper Krantinaari and percussionist Charu, Sound of Women focuses on documenting, collaborating with, and creating a platform for female and femme presenting folk artists across India, especially from regions where access to recording spaces and visibility is extremely limited. Over the past few years, the project has worked closely with FLINTA artists from states like Uttarakhand, recording their music through a mobile studio setup and building an archive of original folk compositions and voices.
