NAVIGATING A MUSIC CAREER WITH NEURODIVERSITY
This workshop is designed to support neurodivergent musicians and people working in the music industry to build sustainable careers while protecting their creative wellbeing.
Drawing on lived experience as a neurodivergent artist, alongside work as a researcher and educator in music and disability, Caro will share personal insights and practical approaches to navigating the music industry.
Together, we’ll explore topics including networking, self-promotion, pacing, rest and burnout, and building a sustainable creative career.
Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own experiences to develop practical toolkits to support different ways of working, managing energy, and regulation, leaving with some ideas they can apply to their own creative practice.
This workshop is open to everyone, including those without a formal diagnosis, people who work closely with neurodivergent colleagues, and anyone who feels they would benefit from the session.
ABOUT CARO COOKE
Caro is an artist, researcher and educator whose work explores accessibility, disability, and neurodiversity in music. Alongside their creative practice as a music producer and DJ under the artist name Caroline the DJ, they are a Research Associate at the University of Birmingham, working in partnership with AlphaTheta and Drake Music on research exploring DJing and disability, having previously collaborated with Native Instruments on related projects.
They also work for Electric Umbrella, an organisation using music to reduce social isolation for learning disabled and autistic people. Caro has spoken on neurodiversity, creativity, and accessibility at events including Brighton Music Conference and Kensington Arts in the Isle of Man, consulted with Dancefloor Intimacy on accessibility in nightlife, and has been featured in DJ Mag discussing neurodiversity and creative practice.

This workshop will be delivered via Saffron’s digital members platform, but non-members who are women, trans, non-binary or gender non-conforming may also purchase a ticket. This workshop is open to people worldwide, but will be running at 7.00 pm BST, so please bear time zone differences in mind. If you purchase a ticket but are unable to attend live, you will automatically be emailed a recording of the workshop after the event.

The gender imbalance in the music technology industry is well-recognised. While we are absolutely not ‘anti-men’, we see that a shorter-term solution is to provide fellowship and learning environments that are not dominated by the cisgender male perspective. Therefore, these workshops are intended for women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming people to attend. While we do not ban cisgender men from attending, we hope that they will respect that this event is not intended for them.
