The Mix Nights DJ course and Saffron For Sound music tech courses are designed to provide safe and encouraging spaces for women, non-binary people and gender minorities to learn new music skills and make connections.

The Mix Nights course combines hands-on, technical DJ teaching with mentoring from our community of industry professionals. Participants graduate the course by playing a DJ set at the end-of-term public showcase event. Saffron For Sound encompasses two beginner’s courses in music production and sound engineering, introducing aspiring producers and engineers to the fundamentals of their subject. Under the wing of our creative community, participants are provided with the technical understanding, support and confidence needed to kickstart their careers, or simply explore their creative curiosity. The sound engineering course walks participants through recording and mixing in a DAW, studio and live setting and the music production course will focusses on music creation using Ableton Live 11.

Our courses have had a measurable impact on the gender diversity of Bristol’s nightlife, festivals and radio landscape, by giving more people the tools and opportunity to take their first steps into the industry. We are excited to be able to bring these courses to cities further afield in the UK in 2021. This expansion of Saffron’s courses has been made possible through support from Arts Council England, Pioneer DJ, Pirate Studios and Confetti Institute Nottingham – who are all committed to powering positive change. Removing barriers to access is important to us, so at least 25% of places on each course are completely free or pay-what-you-can.

Our first Mix Nights DJ course in Nottingham begins on 29th June. Designed for absolute beginners, participants can develop DJ skills in an encouraging, safe and welcoming environment.
